Jazz Dance Classes in Fremont
Sharp, big and unmistakably performed — the style where dancers learn to project to the back row.
Jazz sits in the middle of everything else on our schedule. It borrows ballet's precision, hip-hop's attack, and adds something neither of them insists on: performance. Jazz dancers are taught to project — to finish a movement past their fingertips and hold an audience while doing it.
It is also where the tricks live. Turns, leaps, jumps and extensions get their most focused attention in jazz, which is why dancers on our competition team almost always train it alongside their main style. Our Leaps & Turns classes exist for exactly this reason, as a supplement for dancers who want to drill the skills rather than wait for them to come up in choreography.
What jazz training covers
- Isolations and conditioning. Control of the ribs, hips and shoulders independently, plus the core strength the rest of the class depends on.
- Turns and leaps. Pirouettes, chaînés, fouettés, and the progression of jumps from sauté through grand jeté.
- Combinations. Longer choreography with changes of direction, level and dynamic.
- Performance work. Where dancers learn that finishing a movement and selling it are two different skills.

What is the difference between jazz and hip-hop?
Jazz is more codified and more oriented toward the stage — lines, extensions, and technique inherited from ballet. Hip-hop is groove-based and closer to social dance in its roots. Many dancers take both, and each makes the other better.
Do dancers need ballet to take jazz?
Not to start. But by Level III most of our jazz dancers are also in a ballet class, because the turns and leaps jazz asks for are built on ballet's alignment.
What shoes are needed for jazz?
Jazz shoes — typically slip-on leather or canvas. Our dress code page lists the specifics, and we can point you at where families usually buy them.
Is Leaps & Turns a separate class or part of jazz?
Separate. It is a supplemental technique class for dancers who want dedicated time drilling turns and jumps. Most dancers who take it are already in jazz or ballet.
